The AMSP aims to increase participation in the advanced maths qualifications – Core MathsAS/A level Mathematics, and Further Mathematics – and improve the teaching of these qualifications.

We provide support for teachers and students in all state-funded schools and colleges in England, with additional support for those in AMSP Priority areas.

The programme is government-funded and is managed by MEI. It works in partnership with the Maths Hubs.

The AMSP values the opportunity to work with university academic and admissions staff to promote the study of maths at all levels to school/college students.

We would welcome the opportunity to work with you to support your widening participation aims:

  • Our study, revision and enrichment events for local 11-16 and sixth-form students are often hosted by universities. Students greatly value opportunities to experience learning in a university environment, and to find out how university courses build on the maths they are learning.
  • We provide support to help students from state schools and colleges who are preparing for the university maths admission tests – STEP, MAT and TMUA – including professional development for teachers, resources, and events for students.

We also offer comprehensive information and guidance to help you better understand the mathematical content of the advanced maths qualifications, and encourage you to acknowledge the value of these qualifications in your admission offers.

If you are involved with the initial training of maths teachers, you might be interested to know that we can provide one-day sessions on aspects of teaching Core Maths or A level Mathematics for groups of trainee teachers. Contact us for details.

If you represent a university that would like to get involved with the AMSP’s work, please contact your local AMSP Area Coordinator.

Alternatively contact Claire Baldwin, AMSP HE Liaison, Advice and Guidance Coordinator.
