Core Maths professional development

The AMSP provides support for Core Maths, including a wide range of flexible professional development. These opportunities are often free and in some cases additional subsidies are available to enable more teachers to participate.

The Teacher Events Calendar below provides details of all of our professional development events, including a range of opportunities designed and delivered according to local need by our local Area Coordinators, such as one-day Core Maths courses. It is followed by details of our standard courses.

Events Calendar

Face-to-face courses

Course length 6 hours

An engaging event focused on supporting teachers with the delivery of the increasingly popular Core Maths qualifications as well as contextualised problem solving in other maths courses or courses with mathematical content. This day has been designed to complement our other Core Maths professional development opportunities; all sessions are unique to the day.

Level 3 Maths Work Groups are extended professional development programmes, run in partnership by Maths Hubs and the AMSP. Each Work Group is an ongoing collaboration between teachers from local schools and colleges led by an expert in maths professional development.

Embedding Technology in Level 3 Mathematics Teaching Work Groups will explore where, when and how to use technology to enhance students’ understanding. Participants will develop their own practice as a technology champion in their department.

Level 3 Maths Work Groups are extended professional development programmes, run in partnership by Maths Hubs and the AMSP. Each Work Group is an ongoing collaboration between teachers from local schools and colleges led by an expert in maths professional development.

Supporting Core Maths Work Groups help aspiring, new or experienced Core Maths teachers develop their confidence in the subject. Participants will develop their understanding of the philosophy of Core Maths, with its approach to maths teaching through contextualised problem solving, and will appreciate the different Core Maths courses and be able to choose the one appropriate for their students.

The Work Group focusses on collaborative discussion, planning, trialling ideas between sessions and evaluation.

Conferences

Course length 1 day

A free one-day professional development conference which focuses on developing confidence in working on quantitative skills at A level. This day will be valuable to any teacher whose subject includes quantitative analysis, particularly Biology, Geography and Psychology.

There are optional workshops so that you can focus on the particular mathematical requirements that feature in your course. Strategies and ideas will be provided for teachers to use in their classrooms to deepen their students' understanding and there will be an opportunity to develop confidence in working with real data using technology.

We welcome first time or returning conference delegates. As we are now offering optional workshops there is something for everyone, so please feel free to sign up if you've attended a previous conference and regardless of your level of mathematical experience.

Course length 1 day

A free one-day professional development conference designed for teachers in schools and colleges either offering, or thinking about offering, Core Maths. The day will mainly focus on approaches for teaching and learning Core Maths whilst expanding your students’ perception of the world in which they live. We are excited that at this conference we will be hearing from a representative from a (relatively) local university about the mathematics their undergraduates will be using. We will also have an in depth session on our free online Core Maths Platform, explore those key areas of the curriculum that are giving Core Maths students particular problems as well as providing delegates with ample opportunity to gather resources and ideas and share experiences with teachers from other schools and colleges. Please feel free to sign up regardless of your level of experience with Core Maths or your past attendance to AMSP Core Maths events.

Live Online Professional Development

Live Online Professional Development (LOPD) courses form a programme of innovative online courses, designed to enable teachers to develop their teaching with confidence in a convenient, stress-free way.

LOPD courses are delivered using a browser-based online classroom that allows participants to collaborate online in real time. The courses aim both to cover subject content common to all current specifications and to facilitate the exchange of teaching ideas. Rather than attending a one or two day course away from school or college, participants will use the internet to meet weekly online.

This course covers the main topics which are common to all Core Maths specifications. Further topics to complete the content for each specification will be available soon via the On Demand Professional Development (ODPD) programme.

This course comprises of six online sessions with an experienced tutor, each between 60 and 90 minutes in length and delivered in a small group of teachers, allowing opportunities for interaction and discussion.

Our Core Maths teaching webinars give teachers an opportunity to share ideas, concerns, challenges and successes. Please come along with thoughts and queries that you're happy to share. Each of our half-termly webinars will have a specific focus, usually related to the time of year that we are running the webinar in.

On Demand Professional Development

This is the first section of a group of On Demand Professional Development (ODPD) pods designed to support teachers offering Core Maths or considering offering Core Maths, especially those who are using the Integral Core Maths platform.

The course will comprise a series of 'pods', designed to complement our Live Online Professional Development (LOPD) course Core Maths common topics. Eventually, when complete, this will provide teachers with professional development covering all aspects of the existing Core Maths qualifications.  

In each pod, teachers will experience a variety of content including:

  • short videos explaining the ideas behind the topic
  • practice materials
  • triggers for reflection and suggestions for further study.

Teachers will be encouraged to interact and collaborate with others studying the same material via the online forums. An expert tutor will be monitoring the forums and will respond to queries.

The course offers total flexibility; teachers can access the materials, day or night, over a period of up to one year. Teachers will be able to track their progress within the course and to see when they have completed a section or a pod.
