Core Maths Winter Conference 2019/20Leeds
A free one-day professional development conference designed for teachers in schools and colleges either offering, or thinking about offering, Core Maths. The day will mainly focus on approaches for teaching and learning Core Maths whilst expanding your students’ perception of the world in which they live. We are excited that at this conference we will be hearing from a representative from a (relatively) local university about the mathematics their undergraduates will be using. We will also have an in depth session on our free online Core Maths Platform, explore those key areas of the curriculum that are giving Core Maths students particular problems as well as providing delegates with ample opportunity to gather resources and ideas and share experiences with teachers from other schools and colleges. Please feel free to sign up regardless of your level of experience with Core Maths or your past attendance to AMSP Core Maths events.
- Develop pedagogical approaches for planning and teaching Core Maths effectively.
- Increase awareness of key features of the Integral Core Maths Platform whilst considering how best to use it.
- Gain an awareness of how social science courses at universities use mathematics and how Core Maths complements these degrees.
- Network and share ideas with fellow teachers of Core Maths.
Who will benefit from attending?
These conferences are suitable for any teacher who is currently teaching Core Maths or who expects to do so in the future. The content will be relevant to all of the Core Maths specifications.
Priority will be given to teachers from state-funded schools and colleges.
Conference sessions are:
10.00– 10.20 Welcome and warm up teaser problem
10.20 – 11.20 Dealing with data in the ‘Core Maths way’
Statistical analysis is a key component of all Core Maths courses, supports the study of many other A level subjects and degrees and is an increasingly important skillset for young people to have in our ever more data rich society. This session aims to explore how we can teach this aspect of the course most effectively thereby ensuring that our learners can confidently and competently use data to understand the world they live in.
11.35 – 12.20 Making the most of the Integral Online Platform
Our free online platform has now been made available to all centres that are registered with the AMSP. With a multitude of features and resources we will be pointing you in the direction of some of our favourites, showing you some aspects of the platform you may not have seen already and exploring how it might best be used to complement your teaching of Core Maths.
12.20 – 1.15 Tackling the big issues - what are students finding hard?
Now that we have had four years of Core Maths examinations we will be taking stock of the key topics for improvement. What are students finding particularly challenging and what can we do about it to ensure that in future years your Core Maths students avoid having similar problems to their predecessors?
2.00 – 2.15 Gearing up for the pre-release
This short session is aimed at raising awareness of where support is on hand regarding the Core Maths pre-release materials.
2.15 – 3.15 Keynote from university representative
The university Q-Step programme was developed as a strategic response to the shortage of quantitatively-skilled social science graduates in the UK. We are delighted that in this session you will be hearing from a representative from one of the fifteen Q Step centres about aspects of the mathematics they get their undergraduates to do when working in the context of social science. You will be able to cast forward to see where your Core Mathematicians may be heading and consider how the work that you do with your students will prepare them for what may come next.
3.15 - 3.30 Questions & Answers/Reflections
