Year 12 Mathematical Modelling Day



A day of mathematical modelling for Year 12 students and their teachers. Students can attend without a teacher, although we encourage teachers to accompany their students.


  • Encourage enthusiastic Year 12 mathematicians to undertake some in-depth study;
  • Undertake short projects showing different aspects of the applications of mathematics;
  • Hear about how universities consider applications;
  • Introduce the MAT and the TMUA;
  • Explore some TMUA questions;
  • Learn about the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and how this can help students' chance of a university place.

Who will benefit from attending?

This event is ideal for Year 12 students who are thinking of applying to study mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, economics, finance, operational research or related university courses. Teachers with students who are considering such courses will find this course helpful.

The particular focus of this event is mathematical modelling, a theory which underpins not just the whole of mechanics, physics and engineering, but also computer science, economics, finance and operational research.

The style will be similar to the Year 12 problem-solving events put on by the AMSP in November and March, but there's no overlap in content, and those who enjoy those problem-solving days should find this day enjoyable. Those thinking of undertaking an EPQ should find the day especially rewarding, but everyone should have a stimulating time.
